On March 10, 2026, an online event titled “Geopolitics and Minority Rights: Securitizing the Russian Minority in the Baltic States after Russia’s Invasion of Ukraine” will take place, led by Professor at the University of Latvia and WICE project leader Inta Mieriņa.

The event, organized by the Centre for Geopolitics at the University of Cambridge, will explore how security narratives and policy approaches towards Russian-speaking communities in the Baltic states have evolved since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. For security reasons, a number of rapid policy measures have been introduced in areas affecting the linguistic environment, memory politics, and relations with Russia. The discussion will also examine how these developments are reflected in public and political discourse and how they influence the perceptions and civic participation of Russian-speaking residents.

In addition, the discussion will analyze trends in political participation among Russian-speaking communities in the Baltic states and consider factors that shape civic engagement and mutual trust in an information and policy environment influenced by the ongoing war.

Together with Dr Donatas Kupciunas, Inta Mieriņa will address how policy approaches and public narratives can help build trust, encourage constructive dialogue, and strengthen democratic resilience.

Participation in the event is by invitation only.
